South Link Train Line To Be Reopened After Typhoon Repairs

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Residents of eastern Taiwan's Taitung County will celebrate the Dec. 30 reopening of the Taiwan Railway South Link Line, which has been closed after incurring damage during Typhoon Morakot in August.

A musical feast mixed with an aboriginal dance performance has been put together for the upcoming grand reopening ceremony at the Taitung Railway Station, said station director Kao Ming-kuang Tuesday.

To mark the event, tickets for the first train to set off from the station and for an express train departing for Kaohsiung City at 12:52 p.m. will be distributed for free, Kao said.

He also disclosed that Minister of Transportation and Communications Mao Chi-kuo will be at the Taitung station Wednesday for the reopening ceremony, during which he will ring the bell to launch the first train.

The 98.2 km-long South Link Line runs across southern Taiwan, connecting Kaohsiung County in the west and Taitung County in the east.

It was badly damaged by flooding triggered by Typhoon Morakot in August.
